2023-2024 Driving Home the Dream Award: Presented by Keffer Hyundai
"Transforming School Relationships: Empowering Positive Change"
Bill Milliken once wisely said, "It's relationships, not programs that change children." At our schools, we believe in the power of genuine connections to shape young minds and foster a thriving community. When adults engage with students personally and when students feel a sense of belonging within a caring community, magic happens.
Research supports the impact of positive interactions in our schools. According to a study published in The Journal of Positive Behavior, something as simple as a positive greeting at the classroom door can increase students' academic engagement by 20% and decrease disruptive behavior by 9%. Imagine the potential of adding an extra hour of learning per day!
Do you know someone in our school community, a cafeteria worker, bus driver, custodian, or any non-instructional staff member, who goes the extra mile to build positive relationships with students and staff? An individual who embodies the spirit of care, support, and academic growth?
If you do, it's time to recognize their exceptional contributions by nominating them for the prestigious 2023-2024 Driving Home the Dream Award. Thanks to our partnership with Keffer Hyundai and CMS' Student Discipline Behavior Support Department, one outstanding non-instructional staff member will have the chance to win a complimentary one-year car lease from Keffer Hyundai of Charlotte.
To nominate your exceptional colleague, craft an essay that provides specific examples of how they exemplify these ideals within our school(s). Be as detailed as possible in highlighting their commitment to creating a caring student culture. Additionally, gather signed handwritten statements from at least three students who can vouch for this staff person's positive impact on their academic and social growth.
Submit your nomination by emailing your essay, the required student statements, and any supporting documentation to sonjag.smith@cms.k12.nc.us by 5 pm on Friday, May 24, 2024.
