  • CMS is the 16th-largest school district in the nation, providing academic instruction, rigor and support each school day for more than 141,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The district operates 186 schools throughout Mecklenburg County from its central offices in Charlotte, N.C. CMS believes setting high standards for all students creates greater opportunity for their future success – in our communities, the region and across the globe. As a result, CMS students are prepared to be leaders in a technologically savvy and competitive world.

    The district is proud of its diverse mix of students who represent 175 countries and speak 146 native languages. CMS offers an extensive range of magnet programs to nurture students' interests and abilities, along with career and technical education pathways that can lead to a variety of career opportunities. CMS also educates, supports and meets the needs of students with learning and physical disabilities.

    One of the largest employers in Mecklenburg County, CMS has more than 18,500 teachers, administrators and support staff. The district is fortunate to have tremendous support from Charlotte's corporate, faith and business communities, as well as approximately 50,000 registered volunteers.
