Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools athletic programs are recognized and respected state-wide. Each year, CMS athletic teams win North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) state championships and several CMS high schools are recognized by the NCHSAA as ejection-free schools.
Annually, CMS athletic rosters total approximately 10,800 high school and 6,400 middle school participants. Athletic programs on CMS campuses strive to support the academic mission of CMS through athletic experiences that assist in the development of the total student. Participation in athletics provides the opportunity for students to learn social, personal, and physical skills that benefit them through their life experiences. Athletics also provides the opportunity to build school spirit and school pride, which in turn keeps students connected with their school long after graduation.
CMS partners with school principals and athletic directors to support overall student-athlete well-being and enhance the student-athlete experience in our schools.

A student-athlete or coach ejected from a CMS contest will adhere to NCHSAA policy

Ejections
The following actions may result in ejection from an event or competition:
- Behavior that interferes with or threatens to interfere with the operation of the competition or event.
- Behavior resulting in loud and/or offensive language, swearing, or cursing.
- Behavior that threatens to do bodily or physical harm to anyone involved with the operation of the competition or event.
- Any other behavior that disrupts the orderly operation of the competition or event.
An individual ejected from an athletics contest or event must depart the venue for the remainder of the competition.
The ejection may also result in a ban from attending all CMS athletic competitions and events.

Sportsmanship
The intent of good sportsmanship is to maintain, to the greatest extent possible, a safe, harassment-free athletic competition and event site for everyone in attendance.
