CMS Launches Year 1 of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Implementation
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is entering a new phase of AI innovation for the 2025–26 school year. We will continue to use the input collected from thousands of CMS stakeholders last school year and to prioritize data privacy and security as we build capacity and pilot innovations for AI use. This deliberate, research-driven approach ensures that all CMS students and staff are equipped to use AI safely and responsibly.
Student Learning
All students will receive grade-level digital citizenship and AI literacy lessons that build shared understanding and clear expectations. Lessons align with the NC Department of Public Instruction’s Student AI Use Continuum, which supports responsible use and academic integrity.
Staff Training and AI Use
All CMS employees will complete foundational training in AI Literacy and Data Privacy and will have access to an AI tool that meets our strict data privacy and security requirements, to enhance, not replace, learning and teaching.
CMS has launched its first cohort of AI Champion Schools, which will lead innovation and share what they learn with other schools throughout the year.
Family Engagement
Families will have opportunities to explore what students are learning and how AI is being used in CMS through this year’s Family Academy series and a new asynchronous AI Literacy course.
