Speech & Hearing

  • Speech-language services are provided to students who are eligible for Special Education and Related Services according to the guidelines set forth by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Students are evaluated and served in the areas of speech production, language expression and comprehension, speech fluency or stuttering, and voice disorders.  Eligible students receive speech and language services according to an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) as a direct or related service. The educational model used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is based on child development normative data, educational needs of individual students, and functional performance in the classroom.  Speech-language services address communication skills throughout the school day, and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) often provide services within the classroom setting to ensure generalization and maintenance of skills.
