Dual Language Application for the 2024-2025 School Year
What is the Dual Language program?
Dual language is a form of bilingual education in which students are taught literacy and content in two languages. Dual language programs foster bilingualism, biliteracy, enhanced awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity, and high levels of academic achievement through instruction in two languages. The goal of this program is to develop bilingual, bi-literate and multicultural students.
How does it work?
Classes are designed for two-way immersion. Two-way immersion means there are balanced numbers of native English speakers and native Spanish speakers. Both groups of students serve as language models and language learners at different times throughout their day.
We have 2 Dual Language classes on each grade level, Kindergarten through 5th.
In Kindergarten, students spend 90% of their day immersed in Spanish while they learn all content and 10% of their day in English when they go to specials.
In 1st through 5th grade, students spend 50% of their day learning content in Spanish and 50% of their day learning content in English.
How does the Dual Language program work with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Magnet at your school?
It is important to note that Dual Language is a program within our school. All students at Huntingtowne Farms receive an IB education. A student in the Dual Language program has multiple opportunities when they transition to middle school. Students can follow the Dual Language program to Collinswood, the IB program to Quail Hollow Middle School, or attend their home school for middle school.
