Sedgefield Montessori School, formerly named Park Road Montessori School, is located in the Sedgefield/Dilworth area of Charlotte, North Carolina. During the summer of 2024, the school transitioned from the original Park Road Montessori campus built in 1948 to the Sedgefield Montessori campus built in 2002. Sedgefield Montessori is a full magnet with no neighborhood component serving students from Pre-Kindergarten through Sixth Grade.
The goal of Sedgefield Montessori is to provide an optimal learning environment that is based upon Montessori pedagogy that will guide, develop and nurture the individual child. Respect for the child is the foundation of Sedgefield Montessori’s philosophy. The staff of Sedgefield Montessori believes strongly that the needs of the child come first. Children, not subjects are taught. The Montessori Method is based on careful observation of and respect for the natural development of the child and has been used to educate children in America and around the world for over 100 years.
Teachers at Sedgefield Montessori instill intrinsic motivation in children to take on the responsibility of their learning. Within the nurturing Montessori environment focused on social and emotional growth, students become active, life-long learners, and contributing citizens of the world.
From the first day of school, students are given freedom along with responsibility. In the Primary grades (Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten), students begin to develop lifelong habits to help them focus on, organize, and find satisfaction in their work. In Lower Elementary (Grades 1- 3) and Upper Elementary (Grades 4 - 6), those habits are further developed into a strong educational foundation grounded in the ability to work independently and collaboratively, think creatively, and persevere through difficult tasks. Expectations for doing one's best, working hard, and serving the community are part of the school's everyday life.
