Dress Code
In accordance with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools’ CMS Student Handbook/Code of Conduct, and in order to maintain a clean, safe environment that is academically focused, the following dress code has been established for South Charlotte Middle School students:
- Students are required to wear appropriate shoes at all times for health and safety reasons.
- Students may not wear hats, caps, head wraps, or other headgear, including sunglasses. (Exceptions will require administrative approval)
- No item may be carried or worn as jewelry that could be used as a weapon (chains, spiked bracelets, etc.) These items will be confiscated.
- The following Items will NOT be worn at school:

- Bedroom shoes/slippers
- Pajamas or sleepwear or blanket
- Clothing must completely cover all undergarments and may not expose any part of the midsection (no core exposed).
- Tank tops must be 3 finger width
- Shorts and skirts must be long enough to ensure full coverage at all times for all students.
- Jeans that have excessive tears above the fingertip area must not be worn
- Clothing can not expose any underwear. Pants must not be worn at a level that exposes underwear. Bras and bra straps may not be exposed.
Consequences for students who do not follow the dress code include:
- 1st offense- Warning, student wears school provided clothes or calls home for appropriate clothing.
- 2nd offense- Administrative parent conference and student wears school provided clothes or calls home for appropriate clothing.
- 3rd offense- After-School Detention and student wears school provided clothes or calls home for appropriate clothing.
- 4th offense- In-school suspension
The school faculty, staff, and administration reserve the right to determine what is appropriate dress or accessory while students are in school. In addition, dress code violations will be entered into the school database as discipline infractions.
