Enrollment/Registration
Q: How do I schedule a tour of JMR?
A: Please email Amber Miliote (jaymtours@gmail.com), our PTA Representative, who conducts the tours on as-needed basis. Tours must be scheduled in advance.
Q: How do I attend & enroll my student into JMR?
A: Please email Ms. Houghton (barbarag.houghton@cms.k12.nc.us), our registrar. She will walk you through the enrollment process. JMR is not a magnet or charter school. Enrollment eligibility is based on living within our designated school zone.
Q: We are moving. How do we request our records to be transferred to our new school?
A: Please email our registrar, Ms. Houghton (barbarag.houghton@cms.k12.nc.us), to schedule an appointment to withdraw your student.
District Calendars & Bell Schedule
Q: When will student schedules be released?
A: Student schedules will be released on August 9th. Students are given a random generic schedule, and they love going into random backdoor ways to see their schedule. However, students will be very disappointed when they see, in some cases, a completely different schedule.
Q: Where do I find the district 24-25 school calendar?
A: Please click on this link to view the CMS 24-25 school calendar.
Q: Where do I find the district A-Day and B-Day calendar?
A: Please click on this link to view the CMS 24-25 A/B school calendar. This calendar will never change regardless of any possible inclement weather days off, etc.
Q: What are JMR's hours?
A: JMR's bell rings at 8 am and dismiss at 3 pm. Students should be in the building before 8 AM. Students missing even 10 minutes could stop them from hearing important information regarding club or sport sign-up, etc.
Q: What happens if my student is late?
A: Parents are required to sign in with their student if they're late in the front office.
Q: What do I do if I need to pick up my student early?
A: Please fill out the following Google Form to indicate to us that you will pick up your student early.
Q: What do I need to do if my student is absent?
A: Please email (robinson.attendance@cms.k12.nc.us) to communicate your student's absence with reason. Students are responsible for any makeup assignments.
Q: What if my student is absent for more than 3 consecutive days?
A: Students absent for more than 3 days require a medical excuse upon return to school.
Q: What if my student forgot to bring their instrument, assignments, etc.
A: Please place them on our dropoff table in the front.
Q: How do I ask a question or go to the front office?
A: Please go to our front office window by our doorbell for service and help! JMR uses this window as a safety measure.
Transportation
Q: How do I register for the bus?
A: Click on this CMS Transportation link and follow the steps to request bus transportation. For school name type in Robinson Middle. Complete the Intent to Ride Form before August 1st to ride the bus on the first day of school. You will be notified of bus assignments mid-August. Students may not ride a bus to which they are not assigned nor can they go home with a friend.
You will use the Here Comes the Bus app to check for the bus assignment and bus stop/time information. When the bus information populates in the app, the student has been assigned and may ride the bus.
Q: How do I find out my student's bus stop information?
A: "Here Comes the Bus" is a school bus tracking app that simplifies parents’ and students' morning and afternoon routines. The app will give them real-time bus location, bus stop information, and text or email notification alerts to help get them to the bus stop on time. Here Comes the Bus utilizes our GPS data and an easy-to-use customizable map that works on computers, tablets, or smartphones.
Signing up is easy!
-
Download the Here Comes the Bus app from the App Store or Google Play for your smartphone or tablet.
Use the district code (73877) and your student’s ID number.
Q: My student's transportation has changed during the school day and my student has no idea of the change. What do I do?
A: Please call the front office (980-343-6944) and we will let them know during our dismissal announcements.
Q: Do I need to send a note if I am picking my student up by a different means of transportation AFTER dismissal?
A: No. Middle schoolers do not need to send in notes. For example, your student is normally a bus rider in the afternoon. You do not need to send us a note saying you will pick them up at dismissal in the carpool line after dismissal. You will need a note if they are leaving during the instructional day.
Communication & Payments
Q: How does JMR communicate with families?
A: JMR communicates all classroom-wide messages and teacher messages through ParentSquare. Families will be lost without ParentSquare. Please make sure your notifications are set to instant. Our team found that teachers would send messages without a parent response, and we believe it was because their notifications were set to email only by accident.
ParentSquare is a communication app for schools. The application offers schoolwide messaging, a schoolwide calendar, and more. Families will need to download the CMS ParentSquare on mobile devices. ParentSquare also offers a website for computers. JMR wants to be sure all families get the information they need for a successful school year.

Student Academic Information
Q: How do I access my student's PowerSchool account to check grades and attendance?
A: Parents can request PowerSchool access through our registrar. Ms. Houghton (barbarag.houghton@cms.k12.nc.us). Please email her and ask for your student's PowerSchool Access report.
Q: What do I do once Ms. Houghton sends me the access report?
A: PowerSchool is a user-friendly web application to help parents and families become more involved in education. Parents can check their child’s schedules, grades, and attendance. Families will need to create an account on a computer before downloading the app to their phones. You will need your child’s ID number and the district code (DJKX).
To access this information you will need to follow these steps to set up your account:
1. Open an internet browser on your computer and type http://cms.powerschool.com/public into the address bar.

Q: How do I support my student during middle school?
A: We recommend reading the book "How to Raise an Adult" by Julie Lythcott-Haims. This book gives a lot of context and insight into our jobs as parents to raise independent and happy adults. In addition, we recommend parents checking PowerSchool every week. This gives middle schoolers the chance to fix mistakes without your intervention, but also allows the parent the ability to support the student in the event the student cannot do it by themselves.
Q: Can my student use their cell phone at school?
A: No. Students are recommended not to bring their cell phones at all. Cell phones are a significant distraction for students. Cell phones must be turned off after entering the building and cannot be turned on until after students walk out the school door during dismissal. Cell phones out and in use during the day will be subject to confiscation and possible ban on campus. Students found with a cell phone - off or on- in a bathroom will be given in-school suspension. Students need to feel safe in a bathroom without the fear of being recorded.
PTA & Volunteering
Q: How do I volunteer at the school?
A: All volunteers must pass a background check and register at cmsvolunteers.com prior to volunteering. We recommend all parents join the PTA and volunteer through one of their committees. Some committees include fundraising, hospitality, school spirit wear, etc. Please join the PTA through Pay4SchoolStuff.com or email jmrpta@gmail.com
