When service comes from the heart, it leaves an indelible mark—and that’s exactly what David Spellmon has done for the Walter G. Byers School community.
In a powerful act of advocacy and appreciation, Mr. Spellmon nominated Walter G. Byers for the Carolina Panthers’ Keep Pounding Day Teacher Appreciation award. His heartfelt nomination led to a joyful and well-deserved celebration for the school’s educators—a moment that brought surprise, smiles, and a whole lot of suds.
But for those who know Spellmon, this act of generosity wasn’t out of the ordinary. It was just another day of showing up, leaning in, and doing the work.
“You are SUPERMAN,” wrote the school’s principal, Mrs. Erin Barksdale-Coles, in a note of deep gratitude. “You don’t ask for, nor want the recognition. You just lean in and do the work.”
That work included arriving early to help organize and support a full day of appreciation for the staff. Volunteers kicked off Teacher Appreciation Week in unforgettable fashion: taking over carpool duty, hyping the halls with a “sizzle run,” hosting engaging morning announcements, and even washing teachers’ vehicles. Teachers were surprised with heartfelt gifts and tokens of appreciation—each one a reminder of how valued and seen they are.
Spellmon’s impact runs deep. He knows the students. He knows the teachers. He knows the unique needs of the Byers community—and he responds with care, intentionality, and action. His selfless commitment is the kind of quiet leadership that fuels lasting change.
