Honoring Clarence "CJ" Johnson
Last night, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education approved the Mallard Creek administration’s proposal to rename our basketball court after Clarence “CJ" Johnson. We are incredibly grateful to Clarence Johnson’s family, CMS Board of Education Chair Stephanie Sneed, CMSBOE representatives, and Dr. Crystal Hill, Superintendent, for their support.
While our community is still saddened by the loss of Clarence “CJ" Johnson, a long-time mentor and basketball coach, we look forward to celebrating his life and profound impact at a forthcoming court dedication event.
This tribute acknowledges the significant impact Coach CJ has made on the school and the city of Charlotte. With a remarkable 41-year career in community service, Coach CJ is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of the Charlotte AAU community. His commitment to our community extended to organizing successful summer leagues and camps, all with a focus on relationship-building and youth development. Most recently, Coach CJ left an indelible mark as the Mallard Creek High School girls’ basketball coach until his retirement in 2022. He was recognized as Charlotte Observer's Mecklenburg County Coach of the Year three times before retiring in 2022.
With this announcement, we would like to share the campaign to complete the court refinishing and an annual scholarship endeavor in Coach CJ’s name.
